PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
ASSIGNMENT 1
Social choreographies in public transportation:
LISTENING TO MUSIC

As fellow travellers in public transportation, we listen to music for several
reasons. Maybe the train is too noisy, or the person sitting next to you is
being loud, perhaps thee’s a baby crying somewhere, we can’t deal with non
silent silence or maybe we just feel like it.
Whatever reason that may be , the passenger has the freedom to do so. And
it is a little freedom in a way. The only choice we can make for ourselves at
that moment. You can’t make the train go faster, quieter, less busy, but you
can choose what to listen to. Even listening to what’s happening in your
wagon is a choice, a situation you can escape
This is a freedom that was only made possible since the
invention of the walk man in Japan in 1979 by Sony. The
first ever device that provides soundtracks to you
anywhere. A portable and private music box, that can
only be experienced individually. Before that innovation,
you could maybe grasp music from elsewhere , such as a
street performer doing an act in a train/metro/etc. , but
that’s not exactly the phenomenon made possible with
the possession of headphones. Wether it’s a mp3, iPod,
smartphone or other , you usually see a passenger
listening to music when they’re alone.
However, you can also catch a glimpse of a group
of people listening to music collectively from a
speaker, disturbing or entertaining the others
around them. Which makes headphones,
earphones or AirPods special, as it allows you to
enjoy music at any volume without affecting
someone else’s journey in public transportation . What you listen to is a personal choice that depends on peoples background, genre preference,
certain memories and sentiment attached to certain songs. Could also be influenced by a
person’s job for instance if they’re a DJ,MC, or musician. One thing everyone benefits from
listening to music in the train regardless of what they listen to, is the opportunity to create a
playlist. The opportunity to listen to a playlist made for you. Whatever musical duty you
procrastinated , you have a chance to complete that.

ASSIGNMENT 2
Object embodiment:
I decided to embody the little screen in buses, trains, metro's, etc., that inform you at which stop you're at, the name of the next stops, the estimated arrival and departure time, sometimes even the speed at which the vehicle is traveling (like NS trains). Anyways, i realized i rely a lot on that little screen so i thought it'd be funny if i interpreted what a screen like this would sound like if it could talk.

LISTENING TO MUSIC
I N S P I R A T I O N:
Question: can we listen to music collectively in public transportation?
A fact: people hate boomboxes , listening to music collectively

Why?: because they are not in control. Not in control of what song is playing, the volume or wether or not they want to listen to music.

Solution: a app that invites everyone around you to listen to music on their own headphones
No need to send an invite, the app recognizes people’s devices instantly like airdrop or the app Bump. It allows you to connect to Spotify, soundcloud, YouTube, Deezer, band camp and so on.

So the ultimatum goal here is to allow customers from all types of music streaming services to join any device playing music by connecting through Bluetooth through any streaming website. This creates allows people who for instance don’t have Spotify or don’t buy tracks on bandcamp (random examples) to experience these streaming services . It's an app That is friendly to all streaming services. This gives you a more entertaining experience in public transportation.

- What am I ?

I am a music streaming app Called Crowder .

- For what purpose am I designed for?

I am designed for creating bonds between strangers in public through music of their choice.

- In what placed am I designed for?

I Am invented for any space that gathers a lot of people, such as bus/train/metro/boat stops and in buses/trains/metros/boats.

- How am I activated?

In order to activate me, you must create an account. After that , you can either create a streaming session yourself or assist an existing one.
Do you ever wonder what people are listening to in the bus you’re in? Are you ever so curious to know wether someone next to you could be listening to the same track as yours? Crowder is an app developed to explore that curiosity. You see, Crowder was built to connect people in public transportation with one simple solution: allowing them to listen to the same music simultaneously. How you ask? Well, think of Crowder as a hallway. It's a hallway in which behind every door stands a streaming Chanel using other streaming mediums such as Spotify, YouTube plus, Soundcloud and the list goes on. That’s right, anyone using our app can listen to songs streaming from everywhere for free. The way this works is , each account needs to be connected to at least one source of music. You can have an anonymous profile or just turn on “incognito mode”, one of our functions that masks your profile while streaming or attending a session. Wouldn’t want to be recognized by anyone in the train maybe. You can comment publicly on the live session or privately message anyone in that Chanel. Wouldn’t want to miss the chance to befriend a great playlist maker;) . And to add creativity to the bunch, you have to name your session describing its vibe. It can be poetic, or it can be descriptive.
Why is our app so great, you ask? It doesn’t bother anyone, if you’d like to leave a session , you always have that option. You can keep your identity safe and you can meet new people and new songs. It also gives anyone the chance to listen to music without even being connected to the internet. All you need is to have your bluetooth on to detect devices around you. In fact you can only share your own streaming session via Bluetooth, airdrop or or by clicking on your session. That way , this app is only functional when two devices are close to each other.
Crowder connects music lovers, and music lovers love Crowder.
Crowder is an app created to improve the quality of your journey in public transportation
Here is an example of a Crowder profile.
Madame Kiwi has connected her spotify, soucloud and youtube accounts their profile.
They have the incognito mode on, meaning their account is anonymous.
The app only uses bluetooth and the location of your phone in order to detect other Crowder users in the area.
This is a screenshot of what happens right before you start a session. If your profile is public but for this specific session you dont want anyone to recognize you by face or name, you can click incognito mode in this page. It's kind of a reminder.
You can also just do a private session in which you choose who gets in the chat .
The way this works is, you can only share your publie or private session by sharing a QR code, Airdropping it or by simply clicking on the session
This is the page that allows you to see which sessions are live at the moment . This is where you click and explore.
However if you click on a session that is private , you are going to enter the password assigned (by the creator of the session)
to the private session.
You can chat to anyone on Crowder, due to our chat section.
You can simply comment on a session as well.
everything is up to you ;) !
I made a little add to visualize how it would look from the outside seeing two strangers bond through this app
